Police in Starkville are investigating a shooting that happened on the campus of Mississippi State University, and took the life of one of their students.

According to school officials, campus police responded to the shooting inside Evans Hall at around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Even though they now have a person of interest, police said they are still looking for three male suspects who fled the building in a blue Crown Victoria.

The shooting vicitm, 21-year-old John Sanderson, was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The school's president gave a statement Sunday morning, saying this is the first time a student has been shot on the campus, and this appears to be an isolated incident.

WBBJ Forecaster Ryan Hoke, who is a student at Mississippi State, said students in their quiet college town are not used to something like this happening.

"In my three years of being here, we've had scares before, but we've never had something of this magnitude," Hoke said.

School officials told students on Sunday the university is operating under "advisory conditions" and classes and on-campus activities should be back to a normal schedule on Monday.

The investigation is ongoing.
